Social media is all around us. Many of us keep up with our closest friends online, as well as “friends” who we may not know very well. We can keep up with people using applications on our iPhones, iPads, Kindles and even our NOOKs. We keep up with events, follow daily status updates and even see the latest photos of our friends via social media web sites. But, can social media assist you in getting a job? Employers Embrace Web 2.0 : The Work Buzz

We’ve talked a lot about the importance of putting forth a professional (or at least discreet) image on Facebook and how employers are paying attention to your online reputation. But, as it turns out, employers aren’t the only ones forming opinions based on social media profiles.

According to a recent CareerBuilder survey, workers and job seekers are paying pretty close attention to the social media profiles of employers as well – and based on the survey results, it seems they have formed some fairly strong opinions about what they like — and don’t like — to see.

Fact: Plenty of people—I’d guess the majority—are getting jobs by spotting an ad, sending in a resume, and interviewing. It may not feel that way, because there are so many people in the job market competing for a limited number of jobs and this means that most people are going to get fewer interviews and even fewer offers. But plenty of those offers are going to people without connections.
